Literary:
A black, woman, Vietnam veteran, amputee returns to the USA eight years
after the conflict, because she was secretly held captive and tortured
by the Khmer Rouge. Since she was presumed dead, her husband has married
her kid sister, and they are now living happily in Detroit. The US Government
refuses to pay compensation for her disabilities since they deny laying
mines in Cambodia, and she cannot collect her pension until she can convince
the Veterans Administration that she isn't dead. Meanwhile, the IRS demands
back taxes and penalties. She tries valiantly to get her life together
with the help of a sympathetic civil rights attorney, and they fall in
love.
Unfortunately, he is killed in the crossfire at a convenience store
hold-up, while he is buying some puppy-chow for a stray dog he has befriended,
and he never learns that she is carrying his unborn child. The final straw
comes when she loses her job at the post office, because her supervisor,
angered by her rejection of his advances, plants stolen mail in her locker
and fires her. As the story ends, she is loading steel jacketed ammo into
the last of her AK47 collection, and making a list of the people that she
blames for the ruin that has become her life....
