BOISE CONTEMPORARY ANNOUNCES THEIR NEXT SEASON

Boise Contemporary Theater is thrilled to bring the best of Contemporary Theater to Idaho Audiences. The Season will begin with GOD’S EAR by Jenny Schwartz. (October 8 – 25, 2008) One of the most innovative new voices in the American Theater, Jenny Schwartz has launched her career with a breathtaking new play about loss, love and language.

Lauren Weedman will make her highly anticipated return to Boise with a brand spankin’ new one-woman show commissioned by BCT for a 2008 World Premiere. Since her record-setting run of BUST here in 2007, Lauren has gone on to perform the show in a number of successful runs across the country. Boise audiences can look forward to another high-energy, multi-character comedy.

In February we will present I HAVE BEFORE ME A REMARKABLE DOCUMENT GIVEN TO ME BY A YOUNG LADY FROM RWANDA. Inspired by the real life experiences of refugees in the UK, the play tells the story of two people from entirely different worlds, who meet in London in 1999, five years after the genocide in Rwanda.

The final play of the season will be EURYDICE, by Sarah Ruhl, winner of the 2006 MacArthur Fellowship. A re-imagining of the Orpheus myth, told from the young bride’s point of view, the play follows Eurydice through her wedding, an untimely death, and a ride down a raining elevator. And that’s just one day.

BOISE ARTS BLOG

Lora Volkert has started a new blog that features listings and information about area arts events. In addition to theater listings she also lists art and music happenings.

An important part of Lora's blog, however, is her weekly roundup of events. It's as comprehensive as any calendar in either of our major newspapers and it's much easier to read and understand.

FREE TICKETS TO BOISE MUSIC WEEK

Each year during the first week of May Boise Music Week puts a full scale musical production onto the Morrison Center Stage. This is a free event. However the only way to reserve your free seat is by filling out a coupon that appears for only one day in the Idaho Statesman. This year the coupon will be in the paper on Wednesday, April 9.
The production this year is "Singin' in the Rain", complete with all the wonderful songs and music. Also, Brent and his crew at the Morrison Center have built an elaborate 'wet set' to make a full scale rain shower for the singing in the rain dance. Any theater techie/geek worth his or her salt is gonna want to see this. Or if you just like musicals, this is one of the best.
Either way, grab a Statesman on the 9th, fill out the coupon and send it in. But do be aware that if you don't reserve a seat most likely you can still see the show just be showing up. It's just that the coupons get first shot at the good seats.

JAY SHERLOCK HAS PASSED AWAY

One of Boise's premier actor/directors and all around good guys passed away on February 27. Jay Sherlock was 86. During his time in our theaters he had worked with almost every group, including Boise Little Theater, Stage Coach Theatre, Boise Music Week and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.
The Idaho Statesman wrote a nice article about Jay. Longtime Actor and Theater Supporter Dies at 86.
Also, Darrell Carver is hosting a tribute blog to Jay. Jay Sherlock.
And Boise Little Theater is planning a 'roast/memorial', according to their business manager, Pat Ryan. "He told many that he didn't want a memorial, but we all feel a need to honor him. So right now we are planning a 'tell funny stories about Jay Sherlock' hour after our business meeting on March 17. We should wrap up the meeting by 8:45 with our vote for board members. Then we can have refreshments and a roast for Jay at 9 PM. That way, people from other theaters who don't want to sit through our meeting can show up at 8:45 PM." For more information you can email Pat.

NEW THEATER COMPANY

There's another new theatre group in town. It is called The Idaho Actors Collective and the Actors Collective Theatre. They also have a page on MySpace at www.myspace.com/idahoactors . The Idaho Actors Collective is a membership based organization that is multi-media oriented, not just theater. It was founded by Gary Winterholler and Cammie Pavesic and among the many benefits of membership are classes taught by some very experienced and friendly people.

AND ANOTHER NEW THEATER COMPANY

Rumors of this have been rumbling around the valley for several months and I'm finally in a position where I can officially report that yes, there is a new theater company in the Boise Valley. It's name is Alley Repertory Theater and it will be performing it's work in the soon to be open Visual Arts Collective in Garden City. The theater has filed it's Articles of Incorporation, has elected a Board of Directors and will soon announce it's season.
And to quell some of the rumors, while Alley Rep will strive for professional level quality in its productions and does plan to produce serious contemporary work, it will have open access to those of us in the community theater.
