My Third Scotch Philosophy of How the Universe Works
Most of my friends who have sat with me after work on patios or in bars
around town know that about the time I start onto my third scotch I
tend to profess some unique -- and I like to believe profound --
beliefs on how the Universe operates.
So, here is my theory of why the Universe created human beings and how
that relates to theater.
Shortly after the big bang the Universe became sentient. It came to the
desire that most sentient creatures come to, and that is the desire to
know itself.
So with that objective the Universe created physical creatures that
possess the
abilities to sense their physical environment. The Universe created
animals, with their senses of touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell so
that The Universe could experience the physicalness of its existence
through those animals.
But that wasn't enough. The Universe needed to understand
why it exists. So it created human beings with their thoughts and
curiousity. And as we humans learn through our societies and our
cultures what it is like to see certain colors (paintings) and to hear
certain sounds (music) and to feel certain emotions (theater) , the
Universe taps into those human expressions of existence and comes
closer to knowing itself.
Our bodies were created to experience our physical environment. Our
thoughts and emotions were created to help us interpret those
experiences. We use our art to share those interpretations with others.
And as we evolve our art to a more complete understanding of ourselves
the Universe will come to know itself more fully through us.
